How to best help and improve the lives of the poor

Alleviating poverty -- Larry Polhill

Poverty continues to be among the main issues the world is struggling with today, even as displacement from localized wars remains prevalent in certain parts of the world, something not helped by various natural disasters. And as governments and organizations look for ways to solve this crisis, people should work together and come up with more practical ideas of contributing to alleviating the plight of the poor. Below are some ways to bring about such an active change. Larry Polhill.

First is to volunteer. There are many ways that people can directly act in their local communities alone, from existing nonprofits to religious organizations and charities committed to helping the homeless, the elderly, out-of-school children, and the sick. People can go online, check out their websites, or visit offices to find out how they can help. Larry Polhill.

Donating to both local and global charities is another great way to help. People just have to ensure they know exactly which group of people is benefiting, and whether donating goods or cash is the best way to provide aid. The whole process can begin with making a pledge to do away with a regular luxury per month, instead of giving the money to the needy. Or they can donate books, pens, pencils, etc. if their chosen non-profit is more geared toward long-term sustainable solutions like educating the poor.

Speaking of education, a culture of giving begins with educating oneself. Being familiar with the many root causes of poverty will help a person discern the programs where they can best spend their time and energy. Larry Polhill.
